Welcome to my website!  I am excited to introduce myself.  I started teaching at Arbor in 2014.  I taught 4th grade Literacy/Social Studies since that time.  This year, I am excited to announce that I am a fifth grade teacher-teaching all four subjects.   This means that the students in my classroom do not have a switch teacher.

     Literacy
Reader's Writer's Workshop
In Arbor school, we use the reading and writing workshop.  Students will be taught a concept, get a chance to see it modeled for them, they will work together to practice that skill, and then they will get a chance to practice these skills individually.  Students will also get small group opportunities to review skills and discuss concepts taught during our lessons.  In addition to small groups, I will use individual conferences to meet with students in order to assess understanding and provide extra help when/if needed. Time and careful planning will be used in our room in the beginning of our school year in order for students to get used to how reading/writing workshop works in fourth grade and in our classroom.

Math
These are the topics we will cover in math this school year:
Unit 1:  Fluency with Whole Numbers
Unit 2:  Decimals
Unit 3:  Operations with Fractions
Unit 4:  Patterns, Graphing, Measurement, and Geometry

We will begin math with a short lesson opener which will challenge students and get them ready for our math talk for the day.  After our whole group lesson, the students will get a chance to rotate to different centers that range from technology, to enrichment, to hands on activities.

Science
These are the topics that we will cover in Science this school year.
Unit 1 & 2:  Structure & Properties of Matter
Unit 3: Matter and Energy in Organisms
Unit 4 & 5:  Earth's Systems
Unit 6:  Space Systems
Students will get to experience exciting new topic investigations that challenge them to think deeply about science and why/how things happen.

Social Studies
These are the topics we will cover in Social Studies this year.
Unit 1: The Land and Early People
Unit 2:  Cultures Meet
Unit 3:  The Thirteen Colonies
Unit 4: The American Revolution

Unit 5:  A Growing Nation
Unit 6:  Civil War Times

The Social Studies book can be found online by clicking on the link on the right hand side of this page.

Technology Corner in Room 34

I am excited to announce that we will be taking some of our assessments on Schoology!  This is a great way to stay connected, and allow students to see instant results.

We will be using technology to reinforce math lessons and use as a center for learning!

Want to find a book that is
"just right" for your child to read?  Go to the Scholastic Book Wizard link on the right hand side of my page, and type in the name of the book.  I encourage students to read books that are on their level.  Students will have plenty of opportunities to take books out of our school library and take books out of our classroom library.  There is ALWAYS something to read. :)
