Welcome!  The first marking period is spent becoming familiar with the rituals and routines of the Reader's/Writer's Workshop as well as with forming our Book Clubs.  As we progress through the year, the students will be working more independently on their own and with their Book Clubs to think deeply about what they are reading and to write meaningfully about their thoughts in their notebook.  Children should be reading 20-30 minutes daily at home and keeping track of their progress using the reading logs provided.

Room 5 will start the first marking period with social studies.  In chapter 1, they will be exploring our nation's geographical features as well as regions, climate and vegetation, and how people can influence the environment.  Notes are taken in class, definitions are kept in the notebook, and study guides are offered to help prepare for the test.  When mid-marking period approaches, the Room 5 students will switch to science while the Room 6 students start social studies.

The school year went fast!  I would like to congratulate all my 5th graders for working very hard this year in literacy and social studies.  We read a lot of good books, practiced many skills, wrote numerous essays across several genres, and discovered interesting historical facts.  We have a lot to feel good about. Please take the time over the summer to continue exercising your skills by relaxing with a few cool books of your choice.  Have a wonderful summer vacation and best of luck as you enter middle school!
